For a month she took pictures and lived among pot growers and seasonal workers. Together with newspaper journalist Martin van de Velde she turned the pictures she took into the book Humboldt, Green Gold, U.S.A. which can be bought worldwide via their website.
These book tells the story of a large group of independent pot growers that preserved a way of living that was lost elsewhere. While in the rest of the U.S., scaling-up and mechanization meant the end of the small-farm lifestyle, in Humboldt this lifestyle is very much alive.
The weed grown in places close to Garberville, Redway and Benbow is smoked from coast to coast. Humboldt’s green gold provides good money and forms the backbone of the local economy.
