Through a very simple method called Low Stress Training, autoflowering cannabis plants can be trained to ensure they only grow a few centimeters above the rim of their pots. Only a couple of paper clips, some tape and some cotton string was used for the training. You can do it to regular or feminized cannabis seeds too of course, but autoflowers are very easy to grow as proven in our Automatic Cannabis Seeds Grow Off.

In this case, Ed Rosenthal Superbud Auto from Suzy Seeds and the AK-47 Auto from Growers Choice were used after being donated to friends after the first seedlings had sprouted. As such, this can be considered the bonus edition of our nine part Automatic Cannabis Seeds Grow Off.

These two low stress trained autoflowering cannabis plants were grown on a roof terrace which was very open and easy to see from many places around the neighbourhood so some measures were taken to make this grow stealthier.

After receiving the plants they were first transplanted into 20L pots. Although we are aware that autoflowering plants should not be transplanted there was not any choice since they were started in small pots.

25-04-27: Start Low Stress Training

The next day they started their low stress training. It is best to start the low stress training early as then they get used to being trained.

This is the plants nearly 2 weeks later, the Ed Rosenbud has had one extra low stress training string added to it to pull down its main growth tip but the AK-47 did not need another yet as it was growing a lot bushier.

By this point, both plants had already started to flower and had become quite bushy. On this day pictures were taken before and after training.  This training was done to pull all of the main growth tips out to the side of the pots to give more light to the newly forming buds. As can be seen in the pictures they are pulled out horizontally, however, after a couple of hours they will be pointing back upwards by themselves.

On this day it was noticed that some of the large fan leaves were getting in the way of the light to some of the buds.  To remedy this situation some of the fan leaves were pulled off at the stem and others were tucked under the strings.  Only a couple of the leaves were actually removed so the stress to the plants could be kept to a minimum. As can be seen by the pictures, these plants were now in full flowering.

The buds are maturing nicely and some of the pistils are starting to turning brown. They are still a couple of weeks away from harvest but the Ed Rosenbud in particular is giving off a beautiful pineapple aroma.

Harvest day! The plants were chopped from the bottom and then the branches were cut off and the buds trimmed. The trim was saved and put in the freezer to make some cannabutter later, mmmmm!

Wrap-Up

The final dry weights for the Ed Rosenthal Super Bud Auto and AK-47 were 10.9g and 11.3g respectively. This is not a particularly high value but they had some issues from the start and conditions are not optimal on a roof terrace in the Netherlands! They were transplanted which they shouldn’t have been and they did not get full sun all day. They were actually left drying a bit longer than intended as well so the weight may have been higher if they had been pulled down from drying and put into curing jars a few days earlier. Here are a few pics of the final product in its jars curing.

We hope you enjoyed this installation and maybe if you need to do a stealthier grow then this can be helpful for you. Also, we think this shows that, even with sub-optimal conditions, you can get yourself some free weed over the summer with minimal effort!
