The DaVinci IQ is the third portable vaporizer by DaVinci, a follow up to the well received and reviewed DaVinci Ascent and first generation DaVinci. The DaVinci Ascent was for a long time my personal vaporizer, until I fell off my bike with the vaporizer in my bag. It broke and ever since I have been switching from vaporizer to vaporizer. As such I was happy when VapoShop offered me one to review.

Left: DaVinci Ascent. Right: DaVinci IQ.

After forwarding my details, the DaVinci IQ already arrived the next day. What a service!

And as with most technology gadgets, it comes in a beautiful box. Let’s take a look at what we have first.

DaVinci IQPreparing the DaVinci IQ for first time use

When you’ve taken the IQ out of the packaging, you’ll see a Micro USB opening on the side. Take off the tape and plug in the USB cable to your computer or a charging socket. There’s no charging socket supplied, most likely because of international sales.

It takes approximately 3 hours to charge, but as with all technology devices, it’s not a bad thing to keep it charging the first time a little bit longer.

You can actually use the IQ while charging

While you can actually use the IQ while charging, I don’t recommend doing it the first time. When you have charged it before, it is actually a very nice function. Considering you have the IQ next to your bed for example, it’s much nicer to fill it up for a night cap instead of rolling a spliff or joint.

When the IQ is charged, lift the bottom lid open and you will be greeted by a ceramic bowl. Pack it up (very) tight. The little ball, stuck to the bottom lid, actually helps you pack it tight. Now you’re good to go.

Using the DaVinci IQ

Simply press the control button 5 times and the IQ will buzz (haptic feedback), letting you know it has turned on. The LED’s on the front light up and will show the battery charge, followed by showing the temperature mode. By using the up and down button below the control button, you can take the temperature up or down. I usually start at mode 2 and work to 3.

Holding the control button will activate boost mode

Holding the control button will activate boost mode. But whereas it does give you a big hit, I don’t find it required if you packed the IQ tight enough. Clouds of vapor will already be big enough.

As you can see on the pictures, I also prefer to use the extended mouthpiece.

Now the DaVinci IQ actually works perfect, considering you followed above instructions. But it has a couple more functions.

For example, it has a so-called flavor chamber. I believe it is just a leftover compartment that couldn’t be filled with technology. Airflow goes through here and one of the recommendations I found on Reddit by a DaVinci representative was to simply put a little bud in here. It will capture flavor and essential oils, to be used later.

The IQ also has bluetooth functionality. However, as with most bluetooth functionality vaporizers, the application only works with certain devices. It has a lot of potential, considering you could very accurately visit all cannabinoid and terpene temperatures.

Cleaning is relatively easy with the included tools. Make sure to clean the heating chamber so now and then, as well as the mouth piece and flavor chamber.

Pros

  • Use during charging
  • Replacable battery
  • 10 year warranty!
  • Haptic feedback

Cons

  • App doesn’t work for many devices
  • Needs a lot of bud compared to other vaporizers to be packed tight. Not a problem if you live in a legal state though or can grow your own.

Conclusion

If you’re on the market for a herbal vaporizer and aren’t on a budget, the DaVinci IQ is well worth considering. The replaceable battery, 10 year warranty and being able to use it when you’re charging it, makes it pretty much 100% usable all the time.
