I’ve got Almanac Beer Company’s Heirloom Pumpkin Ale, a beer that’s 50% ale brewed with pumpkins and aged in rye and brandy barrels and 50% ale brewed with spices. THEN, that’s paired with Girl Scout Cookies Nectar from GroundSwell medical dispensary in Denver.
I start with the beer, and the taste of fresh pumpkins, cardamom, cloves and notes of cherries from the brandy. Incredible. Then I fire up the torch and take a hit of the cookies nectar. It’s a huge hit, and I get notes of chocolate, mint tea, oak and roasted pumpkins. It’s like eating a pumpkin cookie almost. I take a few more sips of the beer and get flavors of pumpkin pie, caramel and fruit notes from the brandy still.. I destroy another dab of the nectar and breathe out some really nice flavors of pumpkins, pepper, sugared candies and roasted coffee. It was the taste of Halloween. Sips of the beer bring more brandy notes, and the freshness of the pumpkin can not be denied.
The buzz of the two dabs and the strong beer suddenly fall upon my body like a swarm of mad bees, but much more pleasant. It’s really amazing. Hints of of mint and cocoa, along with the spices of the beer linger around as I go back and forth between more sips and a third dab. I’m pretty destroyed at this point, but even as I finish the beer and watch Nightmare on Elm Street on my Xbox, I can’t help but think that this beer and shatter combination make one special treat for Halloween and something I could see becoming a tradition in the future.
Almanac did a great job on the beer, and I wish I could find their stuff more often in Denver. The way they were able to take fresh pumpkins and blend them so well with the sugary sweetness of the brandy and the spicy edge of the spices is just amazing. Then to pair that with GroundSwell and Terp-X’s Cookies Nectar, a top shelf shatter that has some really great terpene retention, keeping a lot of the sweetness and chocolate notes of the plant. A pairing I hope to do again in the future.
I’m going to finish watching Mr. Fred Krueger pull the guts of Johnny Depp across the ceiling and pour the remaining few sips of the bottle into my glass. I hope the rest of you have yourselves a fine October evening! Until next time!
Puff puff sip!
